• The Buick GNX’s turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 pushes out 276 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque.
  • Last year, the same car was listed for auction, but bidding topped out at just $142,000.
  • Only 574 examples of this model are believed to have been made, and this was no. 274.

When Buick launched the GNX back in 1987, it had an MSRP of $29,290. However, in recent years, the ultimate version of the Regal has turned into a prized collector’s item, and several low-mileage examples have sold for over $200,000. This week, another GNX joined that exclusive $200,000 club. Making the sale all the more impressive is the fact that bidding far exceeded what it attracted at auction last year.

Buick only ever built 547 examples of the GNX, and this one is number 274. Last May, it was listed for auction on Bring a Trailer, but bidding topped out at just $142,000, failing to meet the seller’s reserve. Fast forward 12 months, and the GNX was listed up for auction yet again, and this time it sold for $230,000.

As with many other GNXs out there, this one hasn’t been driven much. It traded hands on Bring A Trailer with just 2,200 miles (3,540 km) under its belt. That doesn’t make it the lowest-mileage GNX sold in recent years, but it’s still in excellent condition and will be a welcome addition to even the most exotic of car collections.

Buick worked alongside ASC/McLaren to bring the car to life, celebrating the end of the beloved Grand National. Its 3.8-liter V6 was fitted with a meaty Garrett T3 turbocharger, an air-to-air intercooler, and a custom exhaust. Buick quoted 276 hp and 360 lb-ft (488 Nm) of torque from the factory. This power was transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. In its heyday, the GNX could hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 5 seconds and run down the quarter mile in around 13.4 seconds.

All examples built are painted in the same shade of black and sit on distinctive 16-inch black wheels with chrome outer rims. The GNX also includes vents on the front fenders, small wing mirrors, and a three-piece rear spoiler.

A last-minute bidding battle pushed the price of this GNX to $88,000 beyond the highest bid on it last year. In the space of 27 minutes, 33 bids were placed as the end of the auction approached, lifting it from a high bid of $144,500 all the way to $230,000. Clearly, lots of people are eager to get their hands on a pristine GNX.
