• ABT has launched an upgraded version of the Audi Ur-Quattro from the ’80s.
  • The model gains a Sport Quattro bodykit, and a modern five-cylinder engine.
  • Production is limited to 30 units, all of which have already been sold out.

ABT is no stranger to transforming VW Group models, but the latest creation takes a notable leap back in time, straight into the ‘80s. The tuner has just unveiled a limited-production version of the Audi Ur-Quattro, and it’s not your average retro revival. The car packs a significantly more powerful five-cylinder engine and sports visual tweaks inspired by the legendary Audi Sport Quattro.

The reveal took place at ABT’s “Friends of ABT” event in Germany, where 25 units were sold out within a mere three hours. The demand was so overwhelming that ABT upped the production to 30 units to satisfy their customers.

Review: Audi’s Sport Quattro And Its Group B Brother Are As Different As Apples and Jalapenos

ABT Group CEO Hans-Jurgen Abt shared the sentimental value the Ur-Quattro holds for him. When he took over the tuning business from his father, he inherited the car and immediately started modifying it. His updates included flared fenders, magnesium alloy wheels, and parts from the Sport Quattro, such as the grille and headlights.

The limited production Ur-Quattro sticks to the same formula. While it doesn’t share the Sport Quattro’s iconic short wheelbase, the redesigned nose makes it look strikingly similar to the ultra-rare homologation special. For context, Audi produced 11,452 Ur-Quattros from 1980 to 1991, while only 214 units of the Sport Quattro were made, including just 164 road-going examples.

ABT’s Ur-Quattro Restomod Nearly Triples Power And Sells Out In Three Hours

The bodykit is crafted from Kevlar and carbon fiber, and in addition to the wide fenders and new bumpers, it also features a vented hood and a sizable rear wing. Inside, you’ll find bucket seats and, wait for it, an “invisible” roll cage. Owners will also have the chance to personalize the cabin through ABT’s Individual Programme, ensuring no two cars are exactly alike.

The Performance Upgrades

Under the hood, the restomod gets a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine from a modern Audi RS model, likely from the RS3 or TT RS. The engine has been tuned to churn out a healthy 523 horsepower (390 kW / 530 PS), which is nearly three times the power of the 197-hp (147 kW / 200 PS) original Ur-Quattro. It’s also a notable step up from the 302-hp (225 kW / 306 PS) offered by the Sport Quattro. This is a significant boost in performance, no doubt.

To handle the added power, ABT has equipped the Ur-Quattro with anti-lock brakes, though the tuner hasn’t disclosed any information on suspension upgrades. What they have revealed is that each of the 30 units will have a unique chassis, ensuring every car feels bespoke. And yes, it can be registered as a classic car in Germany, with special H license plates.

ABT didn’t shared details on pricing, but anyone familiar with these reborn classics knows they’re not exactly budget-friendly. However, there’s good news: ABT may have more projects in the pipeline. Hans-Jurgen Abt mentioned that the overwhelmingly positive customer response to this Ur-Quattro restomod has given the team the “courage” to explore other ideas. So, stay tuned for more classic Audis with a modern twist.
